Joe Meek was England’s first independent pop record producer. He held no regard for rules in the recording industry and went about pioneering new sounds in pop music and forged an aggressively defensive DIY practice of studio recording from a bedroom apartment above a leather goods shop off a noisy city street. Even though Joe was instinctively talented, he suffered from a probable bi-polar disorder, wild mood swings, paranoia and depression. Add to the mix that he was a promiscuous homosexual at a time when it was illegal in the UK and it leaves you with an individual fighting against all odds to keep it together. Tragically, Joe took his own life and the life of his landlady on the morning of February 3rd, 1967, ironically or coincidentally, the anniversary of the death of Joe’s idol and main inspiration, Buddy Holly.
